Snoring is very common and most people snore once in a while. Even a baby or a pet may snore once in a while. If snoring happens only occasionally this is of no significance to the person who snores, but is more of a nuisance for the bed partner. However if you snore frequently then this is to be taken seriously and checked out.
Sometimes snoring can occur without sleep disordered breathing and this type of snoring is termed as primary snoring. Primary snoring may be a lower form of sleep disordered breathing and in some cases may progress to more serious sleep disordered breathing like obstructive sleep apnea. Some health problems may be associated with primary snoring also.
Snoring can be a symptom of serious medical condition called sleep apnea. Snoring can be associated with many conditions including overweight, obesity and alcohol abuse. There are many effective treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. Discovering the cause for your snoring is very important to find the appropriate treatment for snoring.
There are many things that you can do to improve snoring and quality of your sleep including weight control, regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake, sleeping on the side, and treating nasal congestion.
Snoring solutions
Lose Weight
Mild to moderate snoring can often be cured with exercise and weight loss. Even losing few pounds can reduce the fatty tissue behind the throat which obstructs the airway during your sleep
Sleeping on your side
Sleeping on your back increases the chance of the tissue behind your throat to obstruct the airway. Sleeping on the side reduces the chance of obstruction and snoring.
Avoid alcohol before bed
Avoid drinking alcohol and taking some muscle relaxing medications before your bed time. Alcohol and these medications relaxes the muscles behind the throat and fall down the airway to cause obstruction there by increasing the chance of snoring.
Avoid blockage of your nasal passage
Congestion and obstruction of your nasal passage can lead to snoring. Having a stuffy nose makes breathing difficult. If your nasal passages are congested, use nasal decongestants to relive the nasal obstruction
